Yiannis Vogdanis

Based in Athens, Greece, Yiannis is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is a constant dialogue between the precision of science and the tactile nature of traditional craft. His journey into the world of 3D printing began in Rome in 2012, while pursuing a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts. In an era when 3D printers were not yet commercially available, Yiannis built his first machine from a kiit, a moment that sparked a lifelong obsession with mechanical systems.

After years of working with high-tech startups and universities in San Francisco, Berlin, and Barcelona, Yiannis found the missing piece of his artistic puzzle during a Master’s in IAAC, 2018. It was here that he witnessed the potential of extruding semi-fluid materials like clay.

For Yiannis, ceramics was a medium that allowed him to combine his passions for mechanical engineering, creative coding, and computational design with a material that requires him to "get his hands dirty."

Yiannis designs and builds his own custom 3D printing systems and extruders. This "deep-dive" into the mechanics is not just a hobby; it is a necessity for his art.

"By creating your own machine, where you know every nut and bolt, you understand it at a level that allows you to push its limits. This sophistication is what enables the pristine surfaces and high-detail geometry that define BinaryCeramics."
