SW-0010 - Sea Urchin - Black Clay Purple Glaze
Details:
Dimensions: 15 × 15 × 33 cm (W × L × H)
Material: Black clay, purple glaze.
The sea urchin test, the hard shell that remains after the animal is gone, is one of the most geometrically precise objects in the natural world. Its pentaradial symmetry, the regular pattern of plates and tubercles covering its surface, the way each element relates to every other in a structure both rigid and intricate: it is the product of millions of years of refinement, and it shows.
The Sea Urchin series takes this geometry as a starting point. The algorithm generates the surface pattern computationally, working from the same underlying symmetry that structures the natural object, scaled, abstracted, and translated into a form that is neither shell nor vessel, but something between the two.
SW-0010 is the taller, narrower form in the series, a vertical interpretation of the same geometry that produces the flat SW-0001. Where the flat form presents the pattern as a surface to look down at, this piece stands upright and turns the pattern into a silhouette. At 33 cm tall, it holds space differently: vertical, considered, more sculptural in presence.
The purple glaze deepens toward the base and lightens at the peaks of the surface pattern, a natural gradient produced by the firing process.
