The columnar form, the radial symmetry, the way structure and function have arrived at the same shape across thousands of species on multiple continents. These are the signatures of an algorithm that nature ran independently, again and again, arriving at the same answer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece begins with that logic and takes it somewhere else. The form is generated computationally, with the structural rules of cactus geometry as a starting point, freed from the original biological constraints. The result is recognisably cactus-like without being a cactus. The forms read as organic, with the irregular, asymmetric quality of grown things, but they do not resemble anything that grows. They rolled in, one after another, each set slightly different from the last in both power and frequency. It was a mesmerizing sight, and I found myself lost in thought as I tried to imagine what it would look like if I could \"record\" all of the waves that I was observing. What patterns would emerge? What aesthetic qualities might they possess? And what would the final product look like?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese musings inspired the creation of this collection. I wanted to capture the beauty and the recursiveness of the waves, to showcase their unique patterns and characteristics. And so, I set out to create a series of pieces that would do just that. The restriction for this collection was one and straightforward - the objects had to emerge from a single, continuous line. However, as we began sketching and experimenting with intersecting this line with itself, we were amazed by the endless possibilities that arose.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we worked, we couldn't help but imagine the potential for these designs when translated into 3D. When we made them 3D, we were struck by the contrast between the unity of the single line and the individuality of the objects it formed. The line seemed to create its opposite, showing how simple building blocks can form complex shapes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis collection is a testament to the power of simplicity and a reminder of the ways in which nature so often employs the same principle to create the beauty and diversity we see around us. It showed us, in a very elegant way, how shapes can emerge from the most basic building blocks and become increasingly complicated. Nature is a master at this, with the four chemical building blocks known as nucleotides coming together in a chain to form the intricate code of life known as DNA. Humans have also devised ways to generate immense complexity from basic principles, such as the game of Go, which has more possible combinations than there are atoms in the observable universe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs I delve deeper into this idea, I am constantly struck by the endless possibilities that can arise from simple foundations. In my design process, I have found that computational design is a powerful tool for revealing complex patterns and shapes that emerge from a few basic rules.
